Hail to the Chief . . .

George W. Gast, NFTA Chief of Police and
Jason Flores, Homeless Outreach Supervisor.
NFTA Police Chief George W. Gast was honored by the Lt. Col. Matt Urban Human Services Center of WNY for his work, and that of the police department, with the homeless population in the Buffalo.

Chief Gast was presented the Homeless Outreach Award at the organization’s annual awards reception at the Pearl Street Grill. The special recognition was a result of the police department’s collaboration with the Center to help place unsheltered individuals who frequent the Metro transportation center. NFTA police officers contact the Center after observing and speaking to an individual who appears to be using the MTC as a place to find shelter and comfort, especially from the harsh realities of winter.

The officers also collect winter clothing amongst themselves and keep it on hand at their duty station so they can donated it to people they see in the terminal who needs a warm hat, gloves or coat.

The Matt Urban Center is a multi-faceted agency headquartered on Broadway in Buffalo. The Center provides services throughout the city such as Housing Services, Senior Services, Senior Apartments, a Weatherization Program, Youth and Family Services, Homeless Outreach Services, G.E.D. and Work Skills Training, Crime Victims Assistance, three Food Pantries and the Matt Urban Hope Center.
