Buffalo Airport mechanic and welder John Kwasniewski got a little frustrated with the broom trucks last winter. Hydraulic lines, which cause the brooms to raise, lower and angle, continuously froze and broke. John designed a special metal fitting to keep the lines from becoming coated in ice and subsequently breaking under pressure.
“We needed to do something,” he said. “I love fabricating parts.”
The invention was a success and helped keep the brooms out on the runways, where they were needed last year.
And where they will (sigh) probably be needed again this year.
