Scholarship to the NFTA's Mike Hernandez

Misael Hernandez has been awarded not one, but two scholarships at Medaille College's Annual Honors Convocation. You may know him as "Mike," in Metro Accounting. He started off as a Metro bus driver in 2004 and has continued to achieve further milestones while balancing family, a career and school.
One of the scholarships that he received was the Allen Lee Downing scholarship. Created in honor of 27-year old Allen Downing, a Medaille Graduate who was unfortunately killed in a tragic motorcycle accident, the program is open to students in Allen’s mold: A high-achieving young man who values education. "This scholarship is very dear to me,” said Mike. “After hearing Allen's story I could really relate to him." Mike also has a huge interest in motorcycle riding and like Allen, he values education. Mike studied at Erie Community College, while operating buses for Metro at night ,for five years. After receiving his Associates Degree in Business Administration - graduating with honors - he began working in the accounting department, where he has worked since 2009. In between working, raising his three children with his wife of 16-years, Marcela Hernandez (who also works at the NFTA),  attending school at Medaille College to obtain his BS, and riding motorcycles, Mike also enjoys flying small planes. His interest was sparked when he was a teenager, when he served in the Civil Air Patrol United States Air Force Auxiliary at the Connecticut Street Armory where he was ranked Airmen 1st Class. Mike's overall aspiration is to obtain his MBA in Executive Management and one day become part of executive level management. He’s well on his way. Congratulations Mike on your achievements.
