Transit Police Officer Garrity Honored

Our own Lt. Michael Garrity, who serves as the day shift commander for the Metro Rail division of the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority Transit Police Department, was honored by the Greater Buffalo Metropolitan Crime Stoppers, Inc. for his continued dedication to law enforcement. Mike began his career in 1984 as a patrolman as one of 60 original officers of the NFTA police department. During his career he has been assigned to both the Metro and Aviation divisions of the Authority.

While assigned to the Aviation division he functioned as the Assistant Security Coordinator for the Buffalo Niagara International Airport. In this role he was responsible for daily interaction with the Transportation Security Administration to ensure the overall safety of the BNIA.

Mike was one of the founding members of the NFTA Transit Police Department Emergency Response Team and currently functions as crisis management coordinator during tactical operations. Additionally, he acts as communication, vehicle maintenance and procurement officer within the department.

He is also assigned on a regular basis to special projects within the NFTA, which serve to provide a positive benefit to not only our police department, but to the Authority as a whole.

Mike is very well known and highly respected within the various Greater Buffalo law enforcement agencies. One of his greatest abilities is to deal with both the public and other law enforcement officers in a fair, respectful and professional manner.

In presenting the award on behalf of the Crime Stoppers organization, Ron Christopher said, “One of the highest compliments I can pay Lt. Garrity is that he is not only an accomplished ‘street cop,’ but also an excellent administrator.”

Congratulations to Lt. Garrity on his much deserved honor.
