Officer Ed Carney is off and running

Transit Police Officer Edward Carney will run in this year's New York City Marathon, Sunday, Nov. 6, on behalf of the Spina Bifida Association.

This is Ed's first marathon. He started training in June, running the perimeter of the Buffalo Airport after his shifts. He participated in a number of local 5-kilometer races over the summer. New York will be the big one, though: 26.2 miles and over 100,000 participants. The race is traditionally lined with thousands of spectators. This year, 130 bands are scheduled to play along the route.

Ed stays fit for his job, but a marathon involves a lot more than fitness. Planning, strategy and months (or years) of conditioning are required. Ed's motivation has come from a friend's child, diagnosed with spina bifida, a congenital disorder of the spine. Affecting everyone differently, it can hamper a child's development. Preventing him or her from walking, let alone running marathons.

The weather looks great for the weekend. We'll be cheering for you.
