Snow Symposium: They come here to learn from the best

The Buffalo Niagara International Airport has won the Balchen/Post Award for the sixth time. Presented at the annual Snow Symposium, the award is given to airport snow-control teams that have demonstrated determination and excellence in keeping their respective airport runways open and safe during winter storms. The BNIA took home the honors for medium-sized airports.
Buffalo hosted the 45th Annual Snow Symposium in April. More than 350 airport professionals, responsible for runway operations from around the world, attended.

This marks the 26th consecutive year the symposium has been hosted by the BNIA. Thomas Dames, symposium chairman said, “The site selection committee continues to be very impressed with Buffalo. The Convention and Visitors Bureau, the area hotels and the NFTA all work together to create an inviting, friendly atmosphere for the guests.”

In spite of 111 inches of snow at the airport this winter, runways never closed. NFTA Executive Director Kimberley A. Minkel said, “This speaks volumes about the dedication and ability of our airfield personnel who work around the clock, including being away from their families on holidays and missing family functions, while working to maintain our runways.”
